What Is the Azuki Manga About?

The protagonist, Shao, is a sharp, guarded survivor from an gritty urban underbelly known as the Alley. Her life fractures when her sister, Rei, vanishes during a relic-smuggling run into the Garden: a sacred, protected realm sealed behind ancient Gates that can only be unlocked using rare red beans.

Desperate to track Rei down, Shao strikes a risky deal with a ruthless crime boss named Zero. Armed with an ancient, volatile water blade that actively resists her will, Shao steps into the Garden as a reluctant relic hunter. She soon discovers that Rei has been altered into something unrecognizable, and the factions orchestrating the transformation plan to permanently sever the link between the two realms.

The Team and Vision Behind the Series

Arnold Tsang (known in long-time art circles as steamboy33) spent years defining the vibrant cast of Overwatch. His experience in hero design and visual silhouette shows immediately in the dynamic character sheets and panel layouts for Azuki.

Tsang described the project as a personal full-circle moment, having started in comics before spending more than a decade helping build major game worlds. Azuki Labs CEO Alex Q. Xu noted that the manga serves as the core narrative engine binding the broader Azuki ecosystem together, which already includes collectibles and the Azuki Trading Card Game (TCG).

Attendees at Anime Expo 2026 got an early preview during Tsang’s live drawing sessions and a limited preview run of the physical debut. Now, global audiences get direct access to the finished digital rollout.
